"I am the Good
Shepherd..." These familiar words of Jesus constantly
remind us of how the Good Shepherd is concerned about us and
how He is present to us on this earthly journey. January
9-14 was National Vocation Awareness Week in the Church.
This week reminds us of the responsibility of priests and
bishops to be good, loving and caring shepherds in the Church.
And just as importantly, all of us are reminded of our mutual
responsibility with and in the name of the Lord to go about
shepherding the community of faith. For me as bishop,
this is a very serious mission. To read more of Bishop Skylstad's column click here. |

Nestled up
against the mighty Columbia, The Dalles can claim less than
20,000 people inside the city limits. It is, then,
amazing that a non-profit store in this small Oregon town did

The 2003 General
Instruction of the Roman Missal quoted from the Ecumenical
Council of Trent to highlight the importance of teaching at
Mass: "Lest Christ's flock go hungry ...the Holy Synod commands
pastors and all others having the care of souls to give
frequent instructions during the celebration of Mass, either
personally or through others [commentator], concerning
what is read at Mass; among other things, they should include
some explanation of the mystery of this most holy Sacrifice,
especially on Sundays and Holy Days, #11." In response to
this command a five part series of Teaching Masses were
developed from the General Instruction to assist with
introducing the New Translation of the Roman Missal.

Patrick's in Heppner was: by God's grace.

LIFE WALL is on display this summer at the Powell Butte
Retreat Center. All are invited to visit and view this
monument to the dignity of all life. The wall was the
product of Oregon State University students who gave names to
the over eleven thousand babies aborted in Oregon in just one

When the Redmond

challenge to come up with enough revenue to pay the bills and
support the organization's Social Services, the endeavor has
succeeded beyond everyone's expectations.
